Job Purpose Lead the comprehensive health care program for the Corallium's diverse marine collection, ensuring optimal animal welfare through preventative medicine, diagnostics, and treatment. Develop and implement quarantine protocols, disease management strategies, and health monitoring systems while supporting conservation initiatives and collaborating with curatorial and research teams. Job Responsibilities Preventative Health Care & Medicine Develop and implement preventative health programs for diverse marine species including fish, elasmobranchs, corals, and invertebrates. Conduct regular health assessments and examinations of collection specimens to ensure early detection of potential concerns. Establish nutrition and feeding protocols in collaboration with curatorial staff to optimize animal health and reproduction. Design and oversee water quality monitoring programs as they relate to animal health and disease prevention. Clinical Care & Treatment Diagnose illness and injury in marine species using observational assessments, laboratory diagnostics, and specialized techniques. Develop and implement treatment plans for ill or injured specimens, including medication administration and surgical procedures. Establish evidence-based treatment protocols for common marine diseases, including species-specific medication dosages and administration methods. Provide emergency medical intervention as needed and support critical care for compromised specimens. Quarantine & Biosecurity Management Design and implement quarantine protocols for all new acquisitions, ensuring prevention of disease introduction to established collection. Develop prophylactic treatment regimens based on species, source, and risk assessment. Establish biosecurity measures throughout the facility to prevent disease transmission between exhibit systems. Lead disease outbreak response, including diagnosis, treatment strategies, and containment protocols. Research & Conservation Support Conduct applied research on marine animal health, disease | | management, and treatment efficacy. Support propagation and breeding programs through reproductive health management and clinical intervention when needed. Participate in conservation medicine initiatives focusing on Red Sea species of particular conservation concern. Contribute veterinary expertise to field conservation projects and rescue/rehabilitation efforts when appropriate. Veterinary Program Development Establish comprehensive veterinary protocols, standards, and procedures for the Corallium's diverse collection. Develop and maintain detailed medical records for all specimens using appropriate database systems. Design veterinary facilities and equipment requirements to ensure capability for diagnostics, treatment, and surgical procedures. Manage veterinary department budget, including medical supplies, equipment, and pharmaceuticals. Training & Staff Development Train aquarists and husbandry staff in health monitoring, basic treatment administration, and disease recognition. Supervise veterinary technicians and support staff, providing professional development and performance management. Develop health-related standard operating procedures and conduct training to ensure consistent implementation. Policies, Systems, Processes, Procedures, Standards and Reports Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations regarding veterinary practice, medication use, and controlled substances. Develop and maintain relationships with external diagnostic laboratories, specialists, and veterinary resources. Prepare comprehensive reports on collection health status, disease outbreaks, treatment outcomes, and mortality reviews. Establish and maintain quality control systems for veterinary procedures, diagnostics, and pharmacy management. Safety, Quality & Environment Ensure safe handling and disposal of veterinary waste, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals in compliance with environmental regulations. Establish safety protocols for staff working with potentially dangerous species during medical procedures. Monitor and maintain appropriate standards for water discharge from treatment and quarantine systems. Continuous Improvement Stay current with advances in aquatic animal medicine through continuing education, professional conferences, and literature. Identify opportunities to improve veterinary care protocols based on outcomes and new scientific developments. Participate in professional networks to benchmark practices and incorporate innovations in aquatic animal medicine. Job Requirements: Qualification and Experience Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree from an accredited institution. Licensed or eligible for veterinary licensure in Saudi Arabia. Minimum 5 years of experience in aquatic animal medicine, preferably in a public aquarium or zoological setting. Advanced training in aquatic animal medicine Experience with diverse marine taxonomic groups including teleosts, elasmobranchs, invertebrates, and corals. Demonstrated experience in quarantine protocols, preventative medicine, and disease Skills Expert knowledge of aquatic animal medicine, pathology, and pharmacology. Proficiency in aquatic animal anesthesia, diagnostic techniques, and surgical procedures. Strong understanding of water quality parameters and their effects on animal health. Laboratory diagnostic skills including microscopy, cytology, hematology, and sample collection. Excellent problem-solving abilities, particularly for novel clinical challenges. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency in veterinary record-keeping systems and database management. Job Context Work is performed in clinic, laboratory, and aquarium environments with regular exposure to water. Position requires in-water procedures and examinations. On-call responsibilities for emergency response may be required. Exposure to potential zoonotic diseases and occupational hazards requires adherence to safety protocols. Position may require physical capability to assist in animal restraint and procedures.
