Anesthesia Technician Job Description

The Anesthesia Technician is responsible for providing skilled assistance to anesthetists in various areas of the hospital, including the anesthetic room, operating room, emergency room, ICU, and recovery room. This role is crucial in ensuring patient safety and efficient anesthesia administration.

• Assisting Anesthetists: Work closely with anesthetists to provide care and support in administering general anesthesia via inhalation or IV methods. Monitor vital signs and other essential patient data.
• Emergency Responsibilities: In emergency situations, the technician may be left in charge of an anesthetized patient for short periods, ensuring their stability and vital signs are monitored.
• Stock Management: Maintain and manage stocks of anesthetic drugs and agents, preparing requests for replenishment. Keep accurate records and financial documentation for the finance department.
• Equipment Maintenance: Ensure all anesthetic equipment is clean, well-maintained, calibrated, and in good working condition. Check and test the anesthesia machines before each use.
• Resuscitation Team Member: Act as a member of the resuscitation team and ensure that resuscitation equipment is also clean, maintained, and serviceable.
• Patient Care: Accompany patients from the waiting area to the operating room and then to the recovery room post-surgery.
• Problem Reporting: Report any issues with equipment efficiency, monitor performance, disposable supplies, drugs, and fluids.
• Documentation: Review and document anesthesia records, ensuring accuracy before shifting patients to the recovery room.
• Training and Education: Participate in training programs and in-service education to enhance skills and knowledge.
• Patient and Family Education: Assist in educating patients and their families about their care, promoting informed decision-making.
• On-Call Duties: Perform on-call duties according to the monthly rota, ensuring prompt response to patient needs.
• Policy Implementation: Adhere to and implement hospital policies and procedures to meet care standards and quality improvement goals.

• A Diploma in Anesthesia is mandatory.
• At least two years of experience post-diploma, working with various general anesthetic procedures, operating room techniques, and instrumentation.
• Proficiency in monitoring vital signs and patient data.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Knowledge of patient safety protocols and emergency response procedures.
• Formal dress code adherence during working hours.

• Start and end each shift with a safety and efficiency checklist.
• Be present in the OR suite during afternoon and night shifts.
• Hand over patient care to other technicians when extending working hours.
• Document all anesthesia-related activities and patient care.
• Participate in patient and family education sessions.
• Perform any additional duties as directed by the Chief Anesthesia Technician and/or Deputy Head of OR/Anesthesia.
